Default Engine noise

Hey guys I have a question. I have a engine noise I'm not sure what it is but it does it at an idle. It stops while I'm driving but if I stop it is a hard noise to describe lol but it's kinda a winding noise sounds like it's coming from the oil pan but I'm not sure. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I just started it and popped the hood and it is coming for my distributor. I can even feel it when I put my hand on it

I looked up some problems on the distributor noise and they are more common than I thought. I'd say it's a bushing or bearing in it. If I put a new one in it I'll have to time it won't I?

No but the gear mesh has to be exactly the same. mark rotor position with chalk on the block or where ever it's aiming when you take off the cap the first time...but did you pull the cap and look it over ?

96 jeep Cherokee 4.0l automatic. It doesn't miss or anything. I can start it and pop the hood and the distributor is making a chirping noise constantly and its doesn't stop. I can put my hand on it and feel that it is coming from the distributor

You can replace it or take it off and apart and lube the shaft.

Good luck with your new distributor. Most are remans and come with a mismatched drive gear so you end up using your old drive gear. You don't time the engine. You've got to index the distributor and lock the shaft in place and then as you install it, the housing turns and when done correctly you can insert the lock plate and hold down bolt. Search for some write ups if you don't have a FSM.
