That **** center console lid latch (aftermarket solution)
I hear that... except I'm the type of person to put the pedal to the floor for days at a time, or when I'm sitting in traffic... Hahaha.
It is pretty ridiculous that replacements are $30 or so these days. For what, $0.87 worth of metal, or $0.02 cents worth of plastic...???

Besides they are free at the boneyard.
At least for me.
And yes I already know that you hate me. LOL.

I'm more than certain this has been a topic I participated in on another thread hahaha.
If I can get to the JY, I may get lucky and find a good one, but apparently the ones in the earlier XJs are hard to find...????
I'm having a guy at work 3D print me a latch for my 96. He is just going to print the main body, and I'll use the old screw and other little piece of plastic that goes with the latch to install it. We will see how it goes.
I think he is going to use light weight filament made for racing applications so I can save 2 grams of weight.

My very first reply on this site (I believe...), -followed it many years for helps with our 3 jeeps.
I have been considering removing my center console altogether in my 88 Renix... -It has a broken latch too and the whole thing seems to crowd my arm space movements in the driver seat. Sometimes there are other angles to consider for solutions; and you get benefits you haven't enjoyed b4. Freeing up the center area will give you more room to wiggle... Some slight mods can be done to tidy up the areas where the e-brake and shifter are mounted, also relocating the brake lever is an option I'm considering too, but a possible new location isn't explored yet: -a future venture. I want to also explore the possibility of a single bench seat across the front to replace both. -I loved them in my childhood days riding with my parents it their rigs that had them. There are ways to make it a better experience, just think beyond the original issue and see whats possible you can change and live with. also, with the massive market for the older jeeps these days; you just might design an after-market latch (if not done already) for the jeep years that present those crappy issues, and sell them for those who want a better latch. Thats how the market became so big for jeeps; -ppl wanted to improve parts and mod their jeeps too, and ppl redesigned alot to do this. Just my thoughts to add here. -Adam M

When I received my XJ, the center console was locked shut. When I finally got it open, there were 2 replacement latches inside and one with the latch hook broken off.
I installed the broken latch and moved on to the the next project 🙄
