I do remember that you must have 18ft of wire between antenna and radio.

And if you have a truck stop near by then there should be a cb shop nearby. I got my radio tuned for $15

ok, well my first experiment into the cb world has been interesting..here is what i learned..buy good stuff and GROUND lol..i bought a super cheap unit off of ebay ( 25 bucks shipped) , an adjustable tip firestick and a ball mount..couldnt get anything to work after installing until i found that i had installed my ball mount wrong and had a bad ground. now it works but i literally only get 2 miles of range..i may have messed up the unit though when testing with a bad ground..i cannot get the swr below 2 no matter what..i am now a ball mount pro though after so much trial and error.
i do have a question though..i have seen amplifiers hooked to CB's before that someone told me was a 'footwarmer' any info as to what they are and how they work?

Like I questioned other poster claiming 14 miles on his, average range for a standard 2-4 watt CB is gonna be 2-4 miles. Gonna have to spend money to get out much further than that. For reference if I remember correctly, I paid around $350-400 for my Peaked/Tuned Connex 4600 Turbo(bench-tested pushing 208 watts clean) and about $100 for my Predator antenna. With that setup, I got out clear about 13-15 miles average and think best I ever did was going through flat desert in Texas and managed about 20 miles.

Yes, you can get amps for CB's. Probably not gonna help your $25 Ebay CB though. Never mentioned what brand/model of CB you have, but it's possible you can take it to your nearest CB shop and they can boost it's power or at minimum, give you some advice. Depending on what ya have to work with though, might not be able to or even worth attempting.

As for external speakers, most decent CB's have a place to hook an external spkr. Never really saw the point in it myself, but if ya want one and your CB has the option, get yourself one. Again, can get those at any CB shop or decent truck stop. Radio shack likely has some as well.

Sounds like you decided to mount the antenna on your hitch instead of on roof or side panel.

See my previous post to answer most of your questions.

It is more than likely, unless you live a good distance from an Interstate, there is a CB shop or Truck Stop nearby. If I new were you lived I might could tell you.

As for Mounting here is my 2 cents.

Antenna: I would get a single GOOD metal coil or whip antenna and mount on my rear bumper. If you really want a roof mount though, get a GOOD Wilson magnet mount and mount it in center from left to right and 6-12" from top edge of windshield.

Radio: Get the best you can afford. TIP: If have the time and have a truck stop nearby(larger the better, large being room for 100+ trucks) and some kind of CB already, go sit at the truck stop in the evening between 6-10PM for a while. Likely be a trucker or two there trying to sell one. As for mounting it, mainly a matter of personal preference and accessibility to good ground. Run power through a inline fuse using proper wire straight to battery, just like a car amp and ground it with same size wire to a good location as close to radio as possible. Another option is a portable setup. Some of the larger truckstops(most Pilots I know do) sell a custom cube shaped box that is designed to mount a radio or CB and optional spkr(s) that you can easily unhook to either move from one vehicle to another or take out when not using. Myself, I would probably mount mine along bottom of dash, in glovebox area or center console.

GOOD LUCK!!!

LOL, GOTCHA.

Guess why I never really saw the point. None of that really comes up driving a big truck, unless perhaps driver wanted to draw attention of a nearby lot lizard, which I wouldn't recommmend. LOL

I wouldn't mount that tall an antenna on roof if it were me. Likely will be banging it on s**t all the time like branches, overpasses, drivethrus, etc... Also, if not mistaken the ideal length for a whip is 102", not 120, so you will need to trim it and make sure to set SWR's.

If gonna do roof route though, like I said before, I would go magnet and put in center(from left to right) and between 6-12" back from top of windshield.

If mount where(roof near windshield, bumper or roof rack)?

Where were you planning on running it when you were planning on mounting it to roof rack? Could still run same way if cable long enough.

If talking about if mount to roof near windshield, I would either run it across roof and through top of door opening(make sure closing door doesn't pinch cable) OR most likely down along edge of windshield into engine compartment and then through firewall.

If bumper, could either run it along frame rail under car to engine compartment and then through firewall OR best way would probably to find a place to run it inside from back and then route cable up to front.

No matter how you run, you may need to get a cable extension to make it long enough(likely wouldn't need an extension with roof near windshield option). Would try to avoid using an extension though if possible. Can get extensions from a CB Shop, Truck Stop, Online or perhaps Radio Shack.

1) what if you have the 92"-102" antenna mounted at the very front middle of the roof above the windshield and the top is hooked onto the very back middle of the roof? I know the range won't be as good for flat areas (where it would be unhooked and stand straight up) but when you're wheelin on the trail maybe it will have better back to front reception and decent side to side reception? Putting together what prior posts said, maybe it will be a better set up than using 2 antennas but will still have similar back to front reception that 2 antennas would?

2) I have an 89 xj limited that came with the telephone and I noticed that the wire with 2 screws that connects to the box under the rear seat has a cable plugging into it that I have an adapter for that looks like it would hook up into a more modern electronic device. I wanted to know if I could adapt that already present wiring system (there is an antenna with the typical antenna cable that goes through the back left window but it's only 6-7" tall) into a cb radio or something else like a range extender for a cell-phone. I am not experienced at all with this stuff so I'm curious if it's possible.
