It can't be this hard

Trying o do a speedometer gear correction on a 2001 XJ. Chart shows I need a 30 tooth yellow gear. No problem, order one up. Install the gear and nothing. Re install the factory gear and it works.
This is he short shaft gear. Everything clicked in like it should. What am I missing. Looking the the 2 gears side by side it looks like the teeth are opposite. Any thoughts?

Potentially the new gear wasn't engaging the tone ring on the output shaft?

If your installing both gears with the retaining tab in the same notches then your prolly onto something regarding not being clocked correctly.

See this video around the 1:20 mark. Other than having backward teeth, this could be your trouble.

Mr. Todd for the win. Learned something. There are several ways to index the pick up depending on the gear size. Match up the correct range and install. Rotate to line up the bolt and a way ya go.
