Default c 8.25, changing carrier, just want to make sure I got this correct.

OK so I have a C 8.25 27 spline, I was planning to install a 29 spline carrier and matching axles. figured the ring gear is reusable right?

Is there anything I need to do to get the carrier in properly? or does it just drop right in?

Have a professional do it...DO NOT try this as your first differential upgrade. 8.25s are not like other axles, they require special tools from Chrysler to do the job right, google it before you do it. trust me I know from experience, I tried and ended up swapping the whole complete axle lol...

Unless you already have the 29spline carrier, I would highly recommend you install a Detroit carrier/locker. Also rehear and change all the bearings. This is a big expensive project, but done wrong will ruin your jeep and leave you stranded. It's plan and simple you have to spend money to save money in this xj game. Good luck!!

That write up is good, but it is still very difficult to get right. Like said above, master bearing and seal kit, you need to replace the carrier bearings every time you take the bearing caps off.

It ain't rocket science.

All that's need is the right tools, time, and a service manual to guide you through the steps.

As for replacing the bearings every time the caps are removed....no.

Wait, to upgrade to 29 spline axles, assuming you have an open diff, you only need the side gears and axles. Is the carrier itself different and I don't know about it?

I'm glad we got this talk back down to earth too, it's only an axle, not an airplane. Frank's right on the tool, easy build.

Have you broken your 27 splines? What prompts the change, just because?

Damn...just trying to keep it deal with the op...Yes it was difficult to do on my garage floor...too many people downplay doing R and Ps and such...not everyone has the resources Serious does. Just trying to be helpful. If everything was easy and everyone knew what they were doing there wouldn't be a tech section..anyhow, back on topic...sorry for my rant..?
