They all work good, I run a spartan locker, same as aussie and lockright in my front axle and it puts up with 40 inch tires.

Detroit is best, the lockright you mentioned for $180 is a good deal and id go with that. If you dont like it then pull it back out and sell it for what you paid and get something else later on

BTW if youre asking this type of question im going to assume that you arent going to be doing something crazy enough to have issues breaking a lock right. Theres plenty of other stuff you'll break first

I have had a lockright locker in my dana 35 for close to 70,000 miles. No problems at all. Sometimes makes clicking noises when I turn a corner but that's all. Locks up great unless coasting. Good locker for the money.

That's what I plan on doing, building on my turdy5 since i'm just sticking to 31s and do easy-mild trails when i'm not just driving on pavement 98% of the time.

when an 8.25 is a dirt cheap direct swap, it just doesn't make sense to spend a single dime on a D35. it's so quick and easy, and you can do discs at the same time if you want. AND it will hold some resale value, where with a D35 you'll have trouble giving it away for free

True depending on where you are since most of them here cost at least $100 with bad brakes, but as a college kid who has other funds I need to keep it reasonable. I've read all about how it's the driver and what levels of off roading they do. I drive like a old man (no offense to any readers) behind the wheel and only do mild trails that being open can hold me back sometimes. I figure a cheap locker, cover, and maintaining the axle would be worth it compared to a swap that might not be necessary. Plus I just put new brakes on mine so that's a factor as well.

they're pretty random. some last for years on a trail and some break in a parking lot. normally if you've got a D35 and you're just runnin what you brung I say fine leave it. but if you're gonna bother with modifying or spending money/upgrades. this is one of those times where it's worth it to figure out how to get a decent axle in there

I hear you, just maintaining an 88' means there's a lot of little odds and ends that need to be fixed where that axle money can go somewhere else for something that's needed more.

Holy 7 year old thread batman.

Since then my opinion has changed.

After breaking two Detroit lockers I will never run one of those again. The parts to fix them cost more than a new locker by itself. The full case strength is a plus for ring and pinion deflection, but I'll save the extra couple hundred for a selectable next time.

And since the release of the Spartan locker I'd much rather run one of those for a lunchbox locker. Stronger pin design and they come with a hardened cross shaft.

I'm curious. Was that the stock cross pin that shattered? Or the small spring-loaded pins?
My Aussie re-uses the stock cross pin.
Thanks

stock cross pin. the locker pins and springs held up well all things considered. don't get me wrong it gave me a solid year of abuse on 35" tires but next time I'd totally take the $30 hit for an upgraded cross pin. it's not completely necessary for everyone and aussie is still a fine product
