So far its stock long block and holding together great, when it goes I'm prolly gonna stick a sbf in it. I just used a NX wet kit that was on my mustang, i richened it up a bit for the jeep but so far so good.

the stock fuel pump will be your downfall, its maxed out on that size of shot. mine went out on a spirited drive home from the track one night.

AS far as auto goes, would be better/easier to run the GM trans, such as the 4L60E and then either a matching driver drop t-case, or adapt NP231/242/241. etc.
heres my personal opinion from different views for you..
1. Doing a 4.6 stroker would be the simplest considering you wont have to change harness or tranny, etc. But i have heard they have a tendancy to blow do to thinness of cylinder walls after bore, but would make a nice amount of power.
2. the v8 idea, go with a 99-02 5.3 w/4l60 or the 4l80(a little stronger) you can use a select combo of tcases after that. You will simply have anywhere from 240 to 300hp to the wheels depending on exhaust, intake, and simple tune/ programmer. upgrades from there are endless, ls2 heads(aluminum), ls3 cam, ls6 intake manifold and throttle body. Youll hav nice power but on the bad side is wimpy dana 30/35's will break for sure, would want to consider upgrading to dana 44/60.
3. A diesel, do a Cummins 4bt, there about 400 lbs more then you stock 4.0 but have an amazing amount of torque, 165hp 300+ tq. Its simple, no computer no harness needed, hook up fuel lines to injector pump and one wire and your ready. Tranny's are a bit harder to match up youll need an adapter (1000$).
Good luck with your choice and would like to see the swap when you do it.

Just out of curiousity, and not meanin to jack a thread, but how much mileage do you think an XJ would get with no lift and no roof rack or anything?
My XJ is my DD for college, but I still mud and crawl occasionally, and I like the idea of havin over 300 HP at my fingertips for the local Honda ricers who are always actin like they own the place.
