The xj just doesn’t have enough power at 280,000 miles when loaded down with people and gear in the mountains. I’m going to install a Chinese turbo. I’m just attempting to use internet parts and a bit of mechanical know how. Being a success or a failure, I will post it all. Here a a few pics of the beginning. Cut out what felt was necessary Going from 2.0 to 2.25” exhaust using online pipe kit and a saw. I plan to build a support bracket off the engine and wrap the exhaust for safety and heat retention. Just installed steering crossover and springs as well
You'll need a way to add more fuel and control timing. A piggyback fuel computer is mandatory. Without a proper tune, you'll blow the head gasket. Keep the boost very low. Good luck.
I attempted to use a cheap watergate adapter and it was the most difficult part of the install. After I finally forced it to work, the location of the watergate is hitting the intake manifold. I will need to just weld in a pipe for the watergate in a different location. I plan to replace the fuel rail and run a new fuel line with an external pump. Hopefully this will allow me to control fuel pressure with a boost sensitivity fuel pressure regulator. If the regulator is not enough, I plan to install an FMU probably 12:1 ratio. I’m initially going to set timing to 6 degrees and work from there. I have hp tuners and it lists the Cherokee on the programmable processors. Maybe I can change timing or fuel tables there as well. My plan is to keep boost at 6psi. I’m not trying to race this xj just keep speed in the mountains. I may need to swap my msd for a boost retard model but I’m trying to keep budget low. I will list some pictures of last nights progress and failures. The exhaust side is on left and hot side on the Rt. The watergate is hitting the intake manifold. SMH The intake with bov are just production pieces from temu. I installed an internal watergate for safety. The watergate in blue will need to be relocated. It’s clocked for my application with oil drain on bottom and compressor outlet pointing upward. Air filter and heat shield also gained from temu. 85% of this project has come from temu so far. Heat shield and charge pipe with blow off valve. Bov This piece was nearly impossible to install and now to be removed after 2 hours of modification. Nuts and bolts cut and ground into position Pic of turbo tag. China knock off Compressor a/r is .5 Exhaust side a/r
Ran an6 line to the front and used an external fuel pump fed by the factory pump. Installed a boost sensitive fuel pressure regulator and the factory fuel pump line for the return. After mounting the regulator on drivers side I believe I will move it to passenger side to have less heat soak and clutter from turbo. This is the regulator I have chosen.
