I have a blown motor in my 4.0 inline six motor good transmission and 4.5 rough country lift. I found another motor 4cylindar with 5 speed. Will that motor fit my transmission that is attached to the inline 6 motor or do I have to swap them out too? I hope even though it will not have the power the 4.0 had but will fit. This is my sons project Jeep but he took it out with no regaurd to the guy that said it was ok and they blew the motor, dropped the first piston right through the bottom of the block. Now he has it back here and we found a downer vehicle that is the 96 but has the 4cyl 5 speed tranny. any help will me appreciated and if there are any ?'s on what all was done to it that I may help any other 96 builders out there let me know.

Agreed. There is much more to it than just the trans mating up with the motor. You would have to swap over the electrical harness. The pcm. All of the various accesories throttle connections ect. Ect. These jeep motors are a dime a dozen I would definetly spend some time looking for a 4.0 and while the motor is out I would opt to replace the clutch assembly.Originally Posted by Kylar
Should be just as easy to find a donor 4.0 motor. It seems backwards and pointless to swap it to a 2.5.

Agreed. 4.0 is much more powerful than the 2.5 and literally so easily found in junkyards around. Or even part-outs on Craigslist.Originally Posted by XJRed96

Ok ok I agree with you all and we wanted to do that in the first place, so know I need to sell this jeep that has the 2.5 new block motor and new transmission so I can get the 4.0 motor that I need. $1000.00 sounds about right for that and the good tires underneath it. All it needs is clutch, pressure plate and exhuast to put it on the road.
