I have a pretty large Surco Safari rack on my xj, I had a bud tell me there was a cheap effective way to mount a bike up there with some type of block..maybe a skewer block. Any ideas what these are or how they would work....ive done some searching with little avail. let me know!

We used these on the front of a truck bed and they worked great. You can get them cheaper, just the first I found.

but i like the idea of the thule rack. but i have 20mm axles and this skewer mount won't work for me.

 

Stand it up in the middle and wrench it down with ratchets. I do it. It'll work fine.

 

Ill have to see the block im not sure how it'll mount...as far as the ratchets you have a picture of this? I need it to stand up and be able to take down quick

That's pretty much it. It can bolt to one of the crossbars pretty easily. I like these because it lowers the profile with the front wheel off.

 

Me too. Thule makes a good 20mm thru-axle adapter, part#53020. I work in the cyclery business and we have plenty of those quick release fork mounts lying around if you need a couple.

 

you can get some with pre-drilled mounting holes... just bolt them to the very front of your rack on the inside on the floor.... they take up hardly any room... then you would have to worry about the block pivoting or moving free of the ratchet strap

I have two mounted on yakima round cross bar tubes... so i don't have to worry about that part.... works great though

 

Get one of the fork mounts for the front and a piece of C-channel for the back wheel strapping it down. Works great. Hell it works for Yakima and others. Now just need to find a 25mm fork mount for my 29er rigid bike.

 

so wish I had a 29er.... not a rigid though

 

29er is a great bike. rigid might be a bit harsh, but then again it has no suspension. Frame and truss fork flex giving it a more comfy ride over a standard straight bladed fork. Should get the frame back from fabrication next week I'm hoping as it has been a long time out.

I'm runnin' a Gary Fisher Montare - from like '96... has a rockshox indy xc front fork... only problem it's about 17" frame and I'm 6'1 so I've been needing to upgrade to a bigger size for a while... I'm trying to hold out for an enduro frame 'cause I've wanted one since I built my first one at the bike shop I worked at back in the day... could have gotten one for less than half retail but I never came up with the money

 

You could use those mounts to do what I did. Just add some brackets to the back to reinforce them though.
