Thats a fullwidth drum 8.8". You want a Gen II explorer disk brake 8.8" 1995-2001 it was a 31 spline unit as well and can be found most of the time 3.73's open, but there are plenty with 4.10's and a limited slip. Other option is a FX4 level II truck the axle will be 4.10's with a gear based limited slip (Torsen LSD similar to a Detroit) 2009+ is going to have disks otherwise they have 10" drums. If you have the option I would do the one with the Torsen over a craplok anyday.
Could a 4.10 Torsen be regeared to a 3.54? Just want to know in case one falls into my lap. Don't know what the carrier break is if there is one on an 8.8.
Oh, never mind... just looked it up... there is no 3.54 for an 8.8, it's 3.55 *pout*
to the OP: make sure the gears match your front axle, and/or the one you plan on building, otherwise you won't be able to use 4WD anymore! (I actually don't think that 3.54/3.55 would be a big deal for off roading, but if you engaged it for snow driving and hit a dry patch of road, it might wind up pretty bad.)

also, if anyone has a link to a c-clip removal write up I'd appreciate it.
I was told that it shouldnt really be an issue if I'm only turning 33's
but if its not to difficult/expensive I'd like to knock it out while I'm at it

from what i understand, 3.54 and 3.55 are the same thing. That small of a difference wouldn't matter. The wear on your tires makes more a difference. i was doing some research recently because I found a HP D30 that was 3.54 and my rear end is 3.55.

There is no carrier break on the 8.8" you can run whatever you want with the torsen LSD, 4.56 and up require a notched crosspin however. 3.55 and 3.54 are essentially the same thing just like 4.10 and 4.11. Street or offroad it will perform fine. Ford labels them on the 8.8" as 3.55s anyway. The way I look at the 8.8" as well if you regear to 3.55 you don't need one. There is no tire that runs well with 3.55s that you cannot run with a D35 I would regear the front to 4.10s before I regeared the rear to match 3.55s.
You know what's funny, is I just looked up some R&P sets for the two axles (D35 and F8.8) and they both were 39/11... only one of those numbers can be right, and it's actually *gasp* Ford, if you follow the rules for rounding that you were taught in grade school. I just ASSumed that they would be different gear tooth counts, kind of like 37/9 = 4.11:1; 41/10 = 4.10:1. So... I guess if someone gave me a disc/Torsen 8.8 for free or dirt cheap it might be worthwhile to swap the gears just to get the Torsen and discs... and then I'd have a set of 4.10's on the shelf in case I ever wanted to go big.

All good to know and you're probably right about not needing the 8.8, I'm not really a wheeler but do occasionally have to drive on really crappy roads (e.g. when I went to visit my parents I engaged 4WD about a mile away from their house, and I certainly wouldn't have been able to climb their driveway without it.) therefore the appeal of the 8.8/Torsen is the Torsen and discs more than the stronger housing. But stronger is appealing too... and if my reading doesn't lie to me you can apparently use the ABS sensor from some 8.8s with the stock Jeep ABS system which would be nice, not that I'm a huge fan of ABS but I'm always nervous for liability reasons about "disabling safety systems."
