Default Best Cam for the money

Looking for a cam for my 98. Want good off idle power. Looking to get going really fast, really quick. Street legal is best.

if you're looking to replace your cam with a performance cam, to do it right it's not as simple and just putting in a new cam

The Best cam is in there now.

To replace the cam with another like Comp 231 or 232 you will need to pull the head.
You will need new lifters, probably new different length pushrods, new valve springs. Probably need new timing chain and depending on the mileage rebuilt head.

Better just put on 1.7:1 roller rockers and 62mmTB and call it a day.
1.7 rockers will add about 0.025" lift and 5* additional duration.

By the time you've done all the upgrades that you should do before putting comp cams in your engine you would already have an idea of what kind of cam you are looking for. Asking such a generic question implies that you haven't done much, if anything, to your engine and probably shouldn't be looking at cams until you sort out the other things that come first.

...and if you are looking to go 'really fast, really quick' an XJ is not the right choice to start with....

Well. I've done work to Chevy small blocks in my past. I'm going to port polish and look for some lifters along with. Generic questions is usually what I do, but I can see the confusion. And the reason I say fast quick is I like making sleepers more so than typical speedsters. I have a throttle body being sent out to be done soon as well as a set of 24lb injectors on order. Looking for the right cam to top it off.

My initial reaction was engine swap, but if you are already dropping money on your 4.0 you can call comp cams and they can help you determine what you are looking for. Why not stroke it and get a vertical increase in the torque curve as well as some HP?

The only reason I don't want to stroke it is I have 2 spares for it that are not strokes. I might have to bite the bullet and do it regardless.

I doubt that you will need a set of 24lb injectors, unless you are talking about a set of 793/784 injectors.

to do it correctly and to prevent further component damage 24lb injectors are necessary
