It would probably look better with larger tires.

Thing is, xj's are straight, clean lines. Having them break like that just seems weird. Id never run em but that's my own preference.

They would be ok in the desert. Around trees, rocks and hill sides you'll end up with broken fiberglass.

Not entirely true, Good quality fiberglass fenders are rather tough, I've seen rigs with them before drag the side of their XJ's up V notches and only scratch the paint off the fenders with no damage to the fender and they had majority of the weight on the side of the vehicle since they were offcamber.
