ok so im 1/2 done my aw4 to ax15 swap. the wiring is gonna be a ***** as i didnt exactly think through the electrical side of my swap

if i swap the ENTIRE engine harness from my totaled 98 manual to the ex-auto that should cure it right? it connects at the passenger side of the engine rear, and does engine/transmission sensors and switches. any experience?

 

from the research i've done (got a '00 with AW4, planning on swapping in either an NV3550 or NSG370), you can swap out the ECU and all of the associated sensors (i'm not sure what they are though) and that will work. Or, there's a way to fool the auto ECU into thinking that it's in park/neutral by wiring the NSS. I was planning on going to the dealership and seeing if the wiring harnesses were the same between the autos and manuals. it seems to me that because the wiring for things like cruise control and overhead consoles are already there, and you just have to plug them in and they work, the wiring should be the same, you just have to add the right sensors and ECU. I am not sure though. if you happen to go to the dealership and find out, then post up!

i don't know if you've read it yet, but i have.. several times... i'm getting impatient waiting to save up for the swap. Are you doing a write up or anything? I have a few questions for when I start. #1 is the wiring, so i'm really interested in what you do, and then the crossmember. did you reuse the auto xmember or get one for the manual?

edit - o yeah, naxja has a pdf document thats a write up that is about as thorough as the linked one. i'll post the link if i can find it.

 

Yes I have in my possession both auto and manual 98s. The wiring harness for the engine is indeed different. When it goes to the transmission the auto harness has connectors for the NSS and all. The manual harness has plugs for stuff like the reverse lights switch and I think that's about it. I need a diagram for the connector that goes on the passenger side of the engine that actually connects the engine sensors and all to the jeep. I have the engine pulled from my jeep and it take the front 2 connecters from the ECM. I'm pretty confident that swapping the complete drivetrain harness for the manual will knock that problem out.

 

so, if i remember right, there are 3 plugs that go to the ECU, right? Do you have to replace all 3 and their associated sensors, or is there just 1 that goes to the tranny?

 

2 are the whole powertrain harness and one seams to go inside the jeep (prolly dash, overhead console, HVAC stuff)

 

NSS is the easy part you still have to fool the ECM in to thinking the TCM is still seeing a signal. you will have to manualy wire your reverse lights. you are better off using a factory harness and ecm from a manual trans vehicle if you have it at hands reach and ditch all the auto TCM junk .

 

yea i have the harnesses and am swapping them in. this will enable reverse lights then right? ive been looking at the wiring diagram, and i think the wires are already there for it!

 

I have 2 99's 1 standard and 1 auto., I swapped the PCM from one to the other to try and diagnose a problem. They ran fine but I noticed the shift up indicator light (who needs them anyway) no longer came on in the standard but it did come on in the auto. Switched them back and all was fine, the point being there maybe some other difference that you don't noticebut may screw something up.

 

did you notice if the reverse lights worked? that is my main concern right now

 

Didn't notice, sorry you will probably have to trace it back to the switch.

 

well the only thing thats keeping me up for inspection is my reverse lights. im gonna have to isolate the reverse light sensor and make it a separate circuit for it

 

yeah i could never get my reverse lights to work when i did the swap...do you still have the extra auto harness? off topic: i need the upstream o2 wiring

 

Im 95 percent done with the swap i finished putting the tranny in my 99 got everything bolted up but im having problems it wont start i can manually crank it but crossing the starter but thats it i got the dash lights figured out but i tryed were everyone said to jump the nss and it wont crank no matter how i try so when i get home im going to try to send 12v to the nss park/nuetral wires crossed to try to get it to start but ill tell you pulling the tranny and putting the manual are easy but trying to get it start good luck for me the wiring is the hardest part because i suck with electrical make sure you have a few wobble extensions also it made life alot easier ill post up later if i get it to start

Let us know what you find out, I just decided to do a trans swap when I do my 4x4 conversion.

 

i emailed with the guy who wrote the NAXJA pdf and if you have a manual ecm swap it in unplug your tcm and unplug the nss and everything works as it should you just need to wire up the reverse light switch to the lights...and i am as well waiting for funds to do 5-speed swap and prolly waiting unitl winter to not lose a weekend of wheeling
