in no way shape or form did jeep ever put an ax15 behind a 4 cylinder. dodge did, because they wanted overkill.

To the O.P.

you could not have a worse year xj to do this swap on. the entire electrical system is one year only. the ECU is one year only, and is going to throw a check engine code once you put the ax15 in.

you're pretty much **** out of luck. that thing is going to be bastardized and never quite right, unless you can find all the year specific parts for it.

are there any big issues in the 1997 as far as ecu or whatever goes? i dont really know much about this. as well as, as far as a donar vehicle goes im having a hard time finding a 1997 with a manual in it already, would i be able to use a different year cherokee or wrangler or what?

so i just saw a list of vehicles with the ax15s in them, including cherokees from 89-99.
so would that still work with all of the parts-wise as far as a donar vehicle would go? even if its not the same year as my jeep? i have a 97

lol. nope. you need the harness, pedal assembly, ecu, clutch master and slave from a 97 to 99. no other year will work, period.

the trans would but you're better off getting a 94 or newer so you have the proper size pilot bushing and an external slave bell

Would I have to get a new transfer case? Or does the ax15 hook up to the one that's on my jeep now?

Alright, what about the 4wd set up. With my automatic it has the 4wd shifter right next to the main shifter. Well when I put the ax15 in will I have to run a new 4wd set up as well? Or will the same 4wd wiring/ puting into gear be the same?
