air or electric lockers...pros and cons for both

Both have pros and cons, but it seems like most people go with ARB (air locker.) You can get a good enough compressor to have on board air for tires.

Neither! I'd go with lunchbox. But that's just me. I wouldn't put down $6-900 per axle just for lockers (at least stock axles).

^x2 Unless you are going to upgrade your axles ( Chrome-molly ) and regear, the lunchbox lockers will be your best bet. If you just have to go with selectable lockers, I would go with a Randys R & P Yukon Grizzly air locker or an Eaton E-locker.

installation
As with many things, they will only be as reliable as the installation. With either, you need to be careful about running wires or air lines where they are not likely to get ripped off or melted. My family has wheeled on ARB's since 1991 and we have not had a line problem to date.

The only thing I would consider pro con, is the air requires an air source (conmore expense), and electric will stay locked even though there is no power i.e. if you were to break an air line the axle will unlock so it might be harder to get out of were you are. Its such a small difference its all up to you. Just my $.02 you can keep the change.

I was debating this today and what came to be a large point in my mind is that the e-locker reverts to a limited slip while unlocked. I dont nesecarily want this. Especially for snow driving. The air locker is either open, or locked and Im kind of liking that idea better. It seemed like a great thing at first but think about it.

I know I'm reviving an old thread here but does anyone know what load the activation of an e-locker has on a 12v system? I doubt its much but I'm also weighing the pros/cons of air vs electric and this OX has me enticed despite not having any place to put OBA...

E-Lockers FTW!
I run them in both axles and have done so since 2008 without any problems at all.
The load on the electrical system is minimal, and your alternator makes more than enough power to handle it anyway.
Selectable Lockers are the clear winner, if they are within your budget.
You can also get a Rebate on E-Lockers right now.

I would've gone with e-lockers if I could've, but they don't make them for C8.25 axles. Alas, I had no choice but to go with ARB. At least I get OBA. It's only money...
