Wink 97 XJ fender flare job

i have owned a very stock '97 cherokee 4.0L with RWD since 235K, done a ton lot of under the hood work on it, but the steering and suspension are falling apart. wobbles and clunks all the time... i don't even wanna take a look at that broken-in-half trackbar. it's also got a nasty power steering whine. oh and jello leafs and shot bump stops.

my front flares are missing, and so is one in the rear.

one fell off wheelin
the other two fell off on the highway

the bracket that clips and holds the flares in place are exposed and look disgusting

a kit of 4 fender flares are at least $200, and that is a lot of money for plastic

i'm thinking;

1. kick off the remaining fender flare
2. remove all 4 sets of fender flare brackets
3. remove and stow away the 4 liners
4. cut n fold the holy section of sheet metal
5. use door liner to cover the chipped paint

or;
1. throw jeep in trash bin
2. obtain 4x4 xj
3. start over

or;
1. maybe even buy the damn fender flare set???
2. ????

what do y'all think? let's sit and talk!

thanks fellas. i'm new to any jeep forum, but man do i love being a jeep mechanic. yee-haw.

my xj on a hill mountain, somewhere in the boonies of Austin, TX.

You had me at RWD. Craigslist that baby and channel your money and time into a 4wd model.

That is what i wish i could do. This is my very first vehicle and it was even made in my birth month and year. I fell in love with it and it's only half the fun. two wheels got me to 90% of places.

i make 1600/mo as a student. just gotta save $$ and i can have a 4WD xj. hmm...

what's a RWD worth? who wants a RWD jeep...

I hear yah, slippery slope. You can fix everything you mentioned but it's money money money. If you love it and plan to keep it, well who am I to say what's right for you? Most folks don't use the 4wheel very often anyway. If you keep it you've got to make it safe to drive so think about where you want to put the cash.

same here with the same year and month as my birth year. Mines so 2wd! Since I love it so much I've been collecting 4x4 parts over the last few months to convert it!

Thats what I was thinking. Find a D30 front axle, transfer case and new track bar to get you started. Those three you can probably get cheaper than a 4x4 model, then put the money you would put into the 4x4 you would have bought to keep upgrading this one

exactly what I'm doing.. Especially if you already have a decent amount of money in your current XJ and you know what you have done to it.. Just build it!

I understand what you guys mean. I've had mine since 95 and I have spent money on it over and over when I should have sold it. But it's part of the family so I keep building.

I have a link on craigslist for my 89 xj if you look at pictures 2 and 3 you can see the rolled fenders i like the look. I didn't do the rear driverside because it started raining so i stopped and i've been 2 lazy to the last side.
