I have a four door 97 cherokee sport without infinity speakers. I love my music and I am in my jeep a lot so I am thinking about swapping out the speakers in the rear first. Crutchfield tells me that it should accept 5 1/4" speakers in the back.
Has anyone had any experience trying speakers closer to 5.5 or 6"? If so how did it turn out and what speakers do you rock?
I am currently looking at infinity speakers or polk audio.

Honestly, I can't even hear my rear speakers. Go with a good set of component speakers for the front. Buy sound deadening as well - huge improvement in sound quality. I have Infiniti Reference coax speakers all around and they are a touch too bright for me. I am probably going to swap to Pioneer (budget) or Image Dynamics components when I can afford it.
A standalone amp is CRITICAL in good sounding mids and highs. I am running 60w RMS to all 4 speakers which is their RMS rating, but I feel like they could handle more.
I also just installed (yesterday) an 8" subwoofer in the rear cubby for the low-end (Pioneer 600w amp + SoundQubed HDS208 8"). Still breaking it in and need to quiet all the rattles down, but sounds great for an 8" in a very small enclosure.

to answer his original question: you can run 6.5's all the way around. You will never get it to sound great with just replacing the 4 original speakers, but it will be better than stock. This is what I used for the rear.
