Default 90 XJ wont shift after cleaning

took the new to me 90 xj 4.0 to the wash n go and pressure washed the entire thing, even the engine cuz it was filthy. i had it running while i was cleanin it so i knew it would start, drove half a mile to oreilley to buy some stuff and went back out and the tranny wont shift out of first gear now...it will shift if i red line it to like 5k rpms. did i blow somethin off? is there a sensor that tells the tranny when to shift, maybe it got wet and isnt contacting good...? its been sitting for a day to see if it will dry out and shift but i havent tried yet. ideas?

its prob your throttle position sensor....i did the same exact thing on my 98. i washed the engine with it running, drove/ran fine going back to work, and when i went to go home it wouldnt shift out of first and started throwing all kinds of engine codes.

do a check on your tps....i forget how so you will have to search that one.

i got lucky and just started looking at the first code it threw....which was a tps code. i tried drying it out, but it never worked out...had to buy a new one

yes its on the back side of the tb if i remember correctly......two torx screws holding it in.........i had this problem back in 2001, so sorry i dont remember for sure!!

EDIT.....just noticed your is a 90 and you even told me it was different! i suck today!.....but yes it is one of the sensors on the tb. the front round one is the iac....so it would be the other.

i will run out here in a few and look at my 93 and get back to ya

I think just about everyone who did this had a similar problem. It should dry up in a day or two...Tj
