If you mean the disc conversion, yes, it should be very simple. For the 8.25 you need to open the hole in the backing plates to fit the axle. For the Dana, it should be a direct bolt on with no modification needed.

You guys are being very helpful and I greatly appreciate it. I'm a mechanic but stupid when it comes to the rear Axle. I assume I have the rear Dana simply due to the fact that the diff cover had Dana stamped into it. Same with the front.

I really want to convert to rear discs as I have replaced the entire drum, shoes, hardware, and wheel cylinder. Drums twice actually and I still get a pulsation. Its fine for the first month or two, but it starts doing it eventually. My buddies xj is the same. Will it be easy to get the stuff from a zj or something out of a junk yard and bolt on, or is it more involved?

From what i've read up on it's a direct bolt on (except for grinding the backing plate a bit for the 8.25). Some write ups said something about getting the porportioning valves (springs) out of the ZJ also. Not too sure about that.

I was going to do the swap, but all Junk yard parts are crap in New York. JY swap should be really cheap for you. I ended up buying the Teraflex kit ($550.00), haven't put it on yet. Good luck.

I'm going to pull a part today and snooping around. I need to find out what years for the xjs. I am only getting the mounting hardware and caliper bracket. I'll be getting the calipers, rotors, and pads from Napa.

Check the 03 up Libertys. 02s didn't have rear disc. They are a direct bolt on to the 8.25.
Grab the compete brake lines up to the body. They went to a different thread after 02.

Be sure to grab the calipers while your there. The core charge/refund is well worth it. Just did my front calipers from Napa. $28.00/caliper & $42.00/caliper core charge.

Let us know how you do

If its the rear its a Dana 35 not 30 but swapping the brakes from a zj to a xj Dana 35 is easier I'm pretty sure you don't have to grind out the whole and that's it

Okay sweet. So then I have the Dana 30 in the front then, and the Dana 35 in the rear.

So in all reality. I need to pull the half shafts out, and then unbolt the backing plates to start the swap. Can I re-use the mounting bolts from the backing plate?

While the shafts are out. Install longer studs?

I will need the passenger side zj brake cable and I can re-use the xj driver side cable?

I don't mean to be a pest and keep asking the same questions as others do. I just want to make sure I know what I am doing.

If you have a Dana 35, you will need to pull the diff cover off and remove the c-clips that hold each axle in. It's easy to do but, a magnet is your friend or at least it was for me. I popped my wheel studs out and I am using front XJ studs from Autozone because I run aluminum wheels. I drove the backing plate studs out of the axle falnge and used 5/16-18 grade 8 bolts to hold the baking plates on. Doing this made it easier to get the backing paltes installed for me. I ordered e-brake cables from Morris 4X4 that are made for the XJ disc swap. I still have my axle on saw horses in my garage and I hope to be able to finish it up here shortly. Oh, you may also have the 8.25 being that you have an 01 and those axles are also c-clipped so the diff cover has to be removed along with the clips to pull the axles out.

I have all the parts, just need to find the time to get it done..

So it could be an 8.25 even with a diff cover with Dana stamped in it along with part number and all. I am the second owner of this jeep and the original owner was the state of Tennessee wildlife people. There would have been no swap and there is no record of it in the stack of receipts and paperwork that came with it.

Post pictures of the axle. "Dana" is not an axle.

Dana makes the D(Dana)30, D35, D60 etc etc.
