Default 4x4 conversion!

hey guys im new to the transmisssion and transfercase stuff...i have a 1996 jeep cherokee xj 2wd and im trying to convert it to 4x4 i found the front axle and t-case and i was wonder if my 2wd transmission will work with the transfercase if i get a novak adapter? let me know what to do and the cheapest way.....thanks alot!

You're gonna need a 4x4 trans, or swap main shafts in your 2wd trans with one from a 4x4. and cut a hole in your floor for the tcase shifter.

how much would the shaft cost me and is it possible for me to do it myself?

so also if i change out my shaft do i still use the adapter or just throw on the transfer case?

If it were me I would find a 4wd trans. But that's just me.

No idea on cost, you'd be better off just finding a 4x4 trans in a junk yard. dont pay more than $200 or so for a aw4.

When you get the transmission, try to get all stuff for the tcase shifter. Everything is bolt in, no cutting the floor or anything.

Really? The 2wd's have the slot for the shifter already there?.... Learn something new everyday.

Yup, theres a cover bolted where the lever is and rubber plugs where the body mount for the linkage.

Ive started playing with my 2wd AX15, the only way to convert the trans to 4x4 is new output shaft and housing. Which you would need a spare 4x4 trans for parts and I'm sure aw4's are the same.

Did it myself much easier getting a used trans. Make sure the spline count matches up between tcase and trans though. Also look into putting an SYE kit on the tcase while it's out if you ever plan on doing it. Rusts offroad had one for 190 bucks online I think.

I would assume shaft swap would require dis-assembly of the trans. Price on rebuild kit, filter, pan gasket, fluid, new shaft...cost wise you might as well buy a used trans out of a 4x4. Then you could sell your old trans.
