Default 4cylinder 4x4 swap

Hey guys, this is my first time posting on the forum. I have 1994 xj, it’s a 4banger 5speed 2wd. I plan on locking the rear end with a Powertrax or something inexpensive and I can install in my driveway. But the main goal for this Jeep is to do a 4wd swap. I know all that’s involved in this swap. I don’t know if any of you have tried to find a reasonably priced 4wd ax5, but it’s quite impossible to find. I guess my question for this thread is if any one has any suggestions for other transmissions I could use for this swap. Or if any one has one of these transmissions. And if any of you have any experience with powertrax lockers let me know what you think of them.

The AX5 is easier to find on Wrangler sites, lots of guys swap out the 4 cylinder after adding larger tires etc.
Can even find an AX4 I got one laying around here. Spare for the boys Comanche.
Finding a front axle with 4.11's will be the tough part, since only the four cylinder XJ/MJ came with 4.11's that I've ever seen.

Unless your XJ is in cherry condition, when you add up the costs to convert, its not going to be a cost effective swap. As Andrew implied, it would likely be easier and much cheaper just to by a 4.0L 4WD XJ.

It has 105000 miles and it’s not rotted to hell. Also I don’t want insurance to know I have 4wd and insuring a 4cylinder is much cheaper

The last time I sold an ax5 I sold it for 150. It was from a wrangler. You can get them cheap.
You can also buy a four wheel drive Cherokee cheap too. I have found one for $500. It will need work but not much
Good luck on your project

If you want to, go for it. Not everyone wants or needs a 4.0L. Sometimes you work with what you have. I myself am doing the same conversion with my MJ as well. Is the 2.5L stupid fast, HELL no. But is it reliable, hell yes.
