I bought the same 4.56 gear for D30/Chy 8.25 for under $500 including master install kits for both. These were Motive gears the same I've used in my race cars up to 1500+ HP on a transbrake.

They came from Rustys Off Road he was cheapest on Motive gears at the time and good master install kits to boot they are not all the same.

Yeah I would rather have a spare and spend that money else where. Especially since I only plan on going with 33"s, I'm not into hard core rock crawling. Just like to do some exploring the mountains on intermediate trails at most.

For what you have planned no reason for an 8.8 at all, it does is give you less clearance. A Chy 8.25 97 up with the 29 spline axles are fine and a direct bolt in DB are easy to add to it if you want.

Yes, but I have already bought one out of a 98 Ford Explorer limited slip with disc brakes. (I do wish I would have waited did not realize what all I would want to do) I don't think 1" diff would be that big of deal and the strength of the 8.8 would be worth the trade off.The 8.25 I installed in my XJ is open diff from a 94 Auto. It was a great up-grade from my Dana 35 but I would still like to do the 8.8. I just have to many things that I would like to do at the same time. I think the SYE would be one thing that I can get done before I have to dump $$$$$ into my gear and locker and 8.8 up-grade. Honestly I would need to be wheeling a lot more than I am currently to go ahead and spend so much. Just what to have a plan.

Anyways, what's the consensus on the largest tire size to run on 4.56's? My XJ doesn't get wheeled hard like my TJ, so it will be street/overland/ski slopes. Thinking I should be OK with around ~34-34.5in (actual), which is the same as 31" on 4.10's (which I liked on my TJ) other than the difference in weight. Upgrade to ZJ brakes is a given.

Noted that you sell all the parts by the way, I have to regear before I bring it down to Texas, no way I'm driving 33's on 3.73's 2500 ish miles at 12 mpgs.

However, I would go a step up to account for heavier tire weight. I can't get 4.88s on the Chrysler rear though and I haven't run 4.56's with 35s on an auto. I know the 3.73s with light (duratrac) 33's is unacceptable to me, it's kind of a subjective Q I guess having zero experience with that setup and the benefit of a 4:1 TC on the TJ Rubi.

I don't particularly want to put money into axles that I'll just be unhappy with when I could do a swap on the TJ and use the rubi axles with 4.88s and do a coil conversion for the XJ -- ideally though I'd like to sell them if I'd be happy with the 4.56s on the XJ.

I was running 33's when I regeared to 4.56 gears, and my XJ felt like a new rig with power. Move ahead 3-4 months, I get 35's and now I wish I went 4.88's. Our rigs aren't exactly economy vehicles, if i had to do it again, I would have gone 4.88 even on 33's. Just gives you a bit more power to tow along with all the gear we typically carry.

Until fairly recently it was the deepest you could go.
