If you cant find one at your local autozone, try Scat crankshafts, they just started making them new, do to high demand for jeep strokers, dont forget you will need the rods from a 4.2 also. I was going to go this route also but decided to do a turbo set-up instead.

Having wasted countless hours and thousands of dollars on my stroker I feel exceptionaly qualified to to confirm what you've heard. Reliability is sorely lacking.

To answer your question, the 12 cw is the best choice for a crawler. The added weight comes in handy for low speed crawling and works exceptionaly well ahead of a manual tranny.

If being built for higher reving applications, stick with the 4cw crank.

I paid $850 for the complete engine, tranny, complete vehicle harness, PCM and all of the assorted modules. Drives like a dream.

So if a stroker is not the greatest way to go what about de- stroking? Know that if you take a 327 sbc block and put a 283 crank into it you create the GM 302 sbc that was in the late 60's Camaro's. Has anyone looked into doing this?

Can you please explain the lack of reliability?

I don't think that'd be a good choice.

What crank would you use?

is the 54 or 64 mm nose better or does it not matter. I just so happen to have a spare 82 4.2 motor kicking it at my homestead. Figgured if/when my 4.0 ever needs a rebuilding i wouldn't mind stroking it then, Just don't really want to go out of my way to do it.
