4:1 Transfer Case Upgrade
Ok I'm considering a 4:1 transfer case upgrade so I can keep my street able gears in the xj but have the crawl ratios / lower gearing for
Who else has done the conversion?
Pro's and Cons?
The options I have found are the
Teraflex (there are some reliability questions for early versions)
Jeep Rubicon Rock Trac - used cost about the same as the teraflex and their will be a little loss of ground clearance
Atlas - cost is very high compared to the other two but....it the best you can go

Pro: Awesome, you pick your gear ratio, good for future builds and it's guaranteed. Oh, and you won't have to upgrade ever again. (:
Con: Expensive, but make sure you check out the total cost of working with and installing other units.

Yeah screw all those options. If you're not gonna swing an atlas, just do the teraflex kit. It will at least hold decent resale value when you are ready to sell. Simple and effective

I have seen way to many 300's blow, sometimes it's just the outputs, but way to many times the wholes case cracks. I ran a 241OR for about 5 years, never a bit of issues, strong case, great gearing, I now run a STAK 3 speed (I was worried about it popping out, but so far so good) only reason I sold the 241OR was that I got the STAK at a steal. I would recommend Atlas 1st, then 241OR, not a fan of the teraflex 4:1 231 kit either.

Screw a teraflex unless you plan to crawl a light post at the mall. They burn up easy off road or anything above 2.3k rpms..
Used 241ors can be had for 7-1000. I paid $800 shipped w/ 1310 yokes installed. Way beefier than a 231

I've wheeled with you, you just described your exact driving style
has the availability gone up on the 241OR? that's definitely a better case, but I've been scanning multiple "for sale" boards for years now and don't think I've seen one at all that I can remember.... definitely a better case, if you can find one.
eh more or less. I usually just keep an eye our for deals like this
