You could do Jump Seats in the back. I've had 4 people sitting in the back hatch before like that.

Had a total of 10 people sitting comfortably in the Jeep at the time.

Not impossible at all, we were all in high school at the time.
3 people in the front - one sitting between the 2 seats / with part of her technically in the back sitting on the tranny tunnel. "No center console"
3 people in the back seat.
4 people in the back hatch. 2 sitting up right with our backs against the driver side and feet facing passenger. Then 2 people on the passenger side doing the same thing.

So I think jump seats are a good option for the XJ becuase they would fold up against the side when not in use. So you keep the cargo area.

Looks not totally comfortable. But functional, especially for kids or chicks. You could have an xj full of chicks!

Luckily I'm 6'4 210lbs so I don't do back seats. Never.

 

and you could totally get 2 bags of groceries back there on the sides of the seat.

Looks pretty good, I'm planning to do something like that on my 2001 Limited XJ, as for the cargo space I can solve that, adding some accessory to the roof or in the trailer receiver.
