I have a 99 with 3.55 and I found a MJ in a local pick-a-part (Not sure on the year but definitely a first gen) its a 4 cyl. 2.0L 2WD so im assuming it has higher gearing. Im wondering if i can pull the gear and pinion and put it in my XJ without the case being to small or having any rubbing issues. I also realize id have to get matching front gears but will it or should it haha be the same ratio.

 

The four bangers had 4.10 gears. So if that is what you want then great. That has a different carrier than the other gears which could be a plus if you want that ratio. However they will have to be set up again or they will howl and wear out. No rubbing issues

 

Dont forget the 99 XJ should have a 8.25 rear end while the MJ will have a Dana 35. Gears wont interchange.

 

Your 99 could have a Dana 35 or Chrysler 8.25 if it has the Dana 35 it isn't really worth regearing, you would be better off swapping in an 8.25 and regearing it.

 

I plan to do a 8.8 swap also it does have the 8.25

Why are you doing an 8.8 swap when you have the 8.25? You are gaining very little in strength, both can handle 35s. Also you need the gears for whatever axle you have, Dana 35 gears will only work in a Dana 35.
