No reason to be scared. What makes you want to run staggered size tires? But yes, it'd work, you just wouldn't be able to rotate them. (And if your 4wd forget it) I'm running 255/70/15 on my daily XJ with no lift. Just remember, the middle numbers in a p metric tire size aren't the height, its the height of that particular tire in aspect ratio to the width. Basically a 225/70 vs a 255/70, different widths, but also, even though their both a "70" their different heights too.

Default 235 tires in back?

I guess my previous post did not make it in, so ...

I am running 225 tires on my stock '99 (rear swaybar removed). I need new back tires and wonder whether I can put 235 tires on the rear while keep my almost new 225 tires on the front.

70 on highway/30% off on established sandy trails ... some bumps.

(BTW, I eventually want to do a lift and bigger tires, but I read about so many options and problems that I am confused and apprehensive.)

Tires diameters need to be the same for 4wd to function properly. Just do 225s till you are ready to change all 4.

Unless you plan on staying in 2wd until you have matching tires, stick with the same size front and back

as stated you will want to keep the tires the same size while using 4wd. you could upgrade all 4 and sell the others that are fine. Also if you have 2 different sizes on and you get them rotated there is no guarantee that the tire shop is going to match them up when they rotate and balance them. running 2 different size tires can be done but the tires need to match on each axle or you will burn up your diffs. you could also run 2 different sizes if you have a NP242 Transfer but you would be limited to 2 hi full time and 4 hi full time as 4 hi part time and 4 lo part time lock the TC on the 242.
