Hello!

This is my first post, hope I'm doing it right, anyway thanks for your patience. I just bought a low mileage 01 XJ, I live in Las Vegas and realize it is a very hot day, however my question is do these vehicles get so hot that you need gloves to open the hood? The car is not overheated, the temp gauge is just under 210 degrees. Seems to me the high heat is caused by the intake manifold being so near the hood am I right? Thanks for reading this. Frank

It's about as red as you can get.

considering the temps are over 100 in the afternoon yes the sun can heat the hood hot enough to make you need gloves to open it.

Thanks. I feel a little foolish asking that question regarding the high heat and hood, I just have never had a car that got this hot without it boiling over. I can use gloves.

The intake manifold does not generate heat. Combustion happens after the intake manifold.

The reason the hood gets so hot is that it's a broad, flat hood with no vents, and heat from the engine, exhaust manifold and forward catalytic converters rises and wells up under it with nowhere to go. At the same time, if you're in a hot, sunny climate, the sun is heating it from above. Then it just sits there baking.

So it's normal, although it can cause issues with vaporized fuel in the #3 fuel injector resulting in hard starts when the engine is hot. A lot of people with XJs install hood vents to give the heat a chimney through which to escape. There's loads of info on suitable vents if you search.

Thanks extrashaky, I should have thought more about the intake manifold, it does put out heat but the exhaust manifold is right below so that is where the heat is coming from. I am experiencing the momentary hard start when it's hot, especially since here in Vegas it was a 110 in the sun. I had already ordered from Hyline Off Road phone number 888-495-4631 their louver kit, it just made sense to me. Thanks again!

Its normal for where you live,Unless your jeep is over heating i wouldn't try fixing a problem it don't have.
