I looked into that when I was shopping for a new engine for my 2000 xj. The issue I ran into was that the motor mounts were located in different positions on the two engines I was working with. I am sure it can be done, but I think there will be some fabrication involved.

I didn't get past that to see if there were other differences. I am guessing that the accessories might be mounted differently as well.

Alas i did find someone who has done it!! he said it was done with relative ease and just involved swapping all the xj stuff over and grinding a few tabs and tapping a few of the bosses! So with that being said i will have a write it with a ton of pics as this is a very good swap being that the engine i bought was from an 05 with only 17k miles!!!! With that being said i should have my jeep for another 200k miles!!!!!

Good news! Many people said I can't put an older xj engine into my 2000 because of the totally different type of ignition. I did it and it worked fine. Good luck and I look forward to seein your progress!

How are the swaps coming? I'm looking to snag the 4.0 from my girlfriends 04' WJ for my 99' XJ. Anyone got a write up yet or any idea how long it would take to do? I've got air tools and have turned wrench before..... O wait.... I have an XJ. It should be know that I can turn a wrench...

You'll have to swap over all the motor accessories with it. The belt routing is totally different on the WJ as are the mounts on the block for them.

A/c lines need to be changed as do the motor mounts. They also have a coil pack rather than a distributor.

I swapped an 06 into my 01xj... Like he said, Your water pump, AC compressor, alternator aren't gonna fit. And I think I had to do somthin with the engine mounts. Also, If the 04 is the same as the 06, the pulley fan won't fit on the AC compressor, and the Clutch fan that comes on wranglers is to tall and long. So it'll hit your hood and drill a hole in your radiator...I changed out the blades so my hood was alright. My radiator... Not so much. So after a new radiator I went electric. I kinda wish I just swapped the internals from the 06 block into my old block.

XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

XJ/ZJ blocks and 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.

Bummer..... Thanks for the reply guys. I was finding information everywhere and just wasn't sure if it was possible. Most people were using junkers and I was hoping to pull a full swap with accessories and all. Guess I will just be going with a stroker kit once it's time for a rebuild.

That sounds more fun anyway.
