Was wondering is the 4.0L pistons are same size as the 2.5L pistons. Will the actually fit into the cylinder bores of a 2.5L engine. Was thinking about getting some in my 2.5L Cherokee with conrods pins and rings.

Any ideas guys??

(ps please hold any remarks about "get rid" or "should have a 4.0 instead". For insurances purposes it's cheaper for me to insure a 2.5L rather than a 4.0L. Thanks guys)

Defo not. Lol. It's the 2.5L gasoline engine.

 

I'm not sure about this, but I do remember someone saying that the 2.5 is just a 4.0 with 2 cylinders cut off. If that's the case I'd imagine they are the same, but, again, I'm not sure.

I've also heard the 4.3l chevy motor is just a 350 with 2 cylinders cut off, but I've bever heard any Chevy guys (I'm not a chevy guy) swapping pistons...

Maybe there is a difference?

Maybe, but for what reason do you want to do this? It seems to me that It would be easier to just replace the pistons with the OE equivalent...unless 4.0s have domed pistons, not sure on this question though.

 

Maybe, in the UK though it's possible that the 2.5L gas is very rare and you can only find parts for the 2.5L TD or 4.0L.

Or... he wants to build a 2.5L stroker!!!

 

Basically getting some piston slap and mechanic tells me replacing them is best way. I've spoken to 505 Performance. The people who I've seen do stroker engines and and performance engine parts. Got email back and all 2.5L and 4.0L pistons and conrods are the same. So I was told anyways. Quickest and best advise I've had so far from them.

PS I'd loooooove to get 2.9 Stroker engine!! :-)

 

Oh and new parts prices for all the pistons, conrods and rings (plus other parts) from dealership here are costly. Buying a good cheap 4.0L engine from scrap yard is far cheaper and using the pistons and conrods from that engine. New rings on all and shells. Job sorted! :-) can get an engine for less than £200 here in UK.

 

If your original problem is truly "piston slap"; replacing the pistons is NOT a fix. You would require a rebore and oversize piston to bring the clearances back into spec relationship and resolve a piston slap issue. Why do you think the engine has "slap"?
If there is wear to cause piston slap, then your bottom end and cam/valve drivetrain will aslo be wear suspect and require reconditioning. Your cost will proportionally increase. What is the cost of an engine swap from auto recycler? Can you buy a rebuilt tall block and bolt on your intake/exhaust and accessories, would that option be viable for you?

 

As I said. This is my mechanic telling me this. So don't assume it's me making the choices.

And it's only happening to cylinder 1 & 2. 3 & 4 have no movement. Side to side movement is acceptable. But forward and back movement isn't good news. New pistons and conrods with new rings and shells.

The cost for an engine and fitting it is alot more than replacing pistons. For a good 2.5L engine your looking at £350.

If you can get a good engine installed for £350, why bother with fixing the tired one? As pointed out above the odds of wear occuring on only 2 cylinders, not very likely, the whole engine is tired.

 

Yes yes yes. I know that now!! I've opted for full engine replacement. Ordered it few hours ago. After talking to my mechanic more in depth I've decided to get an engine and have him fit it.

£325 for the engine alone with 70,000miles on it and £500 for the fitting.
