I have a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer and want to upgrade the cooling system (radiator/transmission cooler). The original owner replaced it before me and put in an open system radiator and added a transmission cooler. I would like to do the same by putting in a new open system radiator and transmission cooler. However, I want to ensure they both fit properly in my 1989 Jeep Cherokee because I understand the original parts were a closed system and it had no transmission cooler. Any information regarding what year(s) to search in order to have the best fit etc. is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Napa has a radiator for 91 and later XJs that is for open system and has the bung for the cooling fan switch. about $120.

Since you're new here and have a Renix Jeep, go to www.cruiser54.com and do Tips 1,3,4, and 5 first chance you get. Easy, and saves headaches and $ down the road.

Great info. As Cruiser54 knows, I changed my ‘89 cooling system to open, using the original radiator. I’ll put in one of the above mentioned radiators when the time comes to replace it. I think I’d prefer the filler cap in the radiator rather than in the upper hose.
