Default 1989 jeep wagoneer limited fuel pump lock ring

hi I have a 1989 jeep wagoneer that I have replaced the fuel pump on but I can not for the life of me get the lock ring back on if there is some kind of trick to this someone please Let me know I will try to post some pictures of the lock ring to better explain the situation soon

Use old o ring.....My new one was round never got it to seat correctly . Even greased it up and still would not seal. Cleaned old flat one little grease went on first time. Never looked back...

Clean any rust from the ring also. Need to slide on a smooth surface.
