Default 1986 XJ stock gearing

I have a 1986 jeep Cherokee pioneer with the GM 2.8L V6 and manual transmission. I'm looking to replace the rear end with the matching gear ratio to the front axle. Looking on Wikipedia, it says that the V6 models with manual tenants came with 4:10 gears. Can any verify this??
Also, I'm tryn to decide if I want to stick with the 4.10s or spend the cash and go with 4.56s. Is it worth te money to install 4.56 gears if I already have the 4.10 in the front axle??

youre turning 33's. I've always been told when in doubt go taller.
so definitely 4.56 or 4.88 even
only reason I would get 4.10 is if I had 5 speed transmission and 33's
4.10 gearing was with the 2.5L engines or jeeps with the 'off highway package' I believe

If you want to verify your stock gearing, grab the VIN and call up your local Jeep dealership and ask them to run the VIN. They can tell you what was installed in your Jeep the day it was built.

I ran the VIN on a junkyard Jeep to see if the axles had 4.10s before I invested the 3 hours I spent pulling them out. Took all of about 2 minutes on the phone and they verified it.

I verfied that the stock gears are 4.10. Im currently running the 2.8l with the manual tranny. Eventually I'd like to install a Chevy 350 with a five speed.

Am I gonna notice a difference btw the 4.10 and 4.56, that's worth the extra cash of going with the 4.56s? If I stay with 4.10s I only need to change the rear axle gears in the new c8.25 I've installed.

You may notice a small difference, especially at higher RPM. It it worth it? Well, that depends on what you're going to do with your XJ mostly. For a DD, you might be inclined to re-gear to save gas by putting your engine back into its fuel efficient RPM range. However, a re-gear is pretty expensive and not something you want to tackle on your own unless you have an extensive understanding on it. New gears front and rear will cost around $500 and having a place install them is around $500 too if not more. It's really about personal preference though.
