Has anyone done this swap? I have an opportunity to pick one up cheap from a JY. The guy told me it was a d35 with discs. I have a d35 and just wanted the discs. I got there to look at it and it's an 8.25 but it had some things on it I couldn't identify

What is that cylinder on the right?

Not sure but it looks like rollers. Do you plan to convert your rear to coils or add spring perches to the 8.25?

Hmmmm ......you would have to change the pinion yoke.... and the Axle shafts are longer in a Liberty, so I am guessing the axle is wider.

Also what Cylinder are you talking about these?

If so some quick Google research finds it is called a Pinion Yoke Damper, I am not sure what it does, but I am guessing to cut on vibrations or something.

It's a vibration dampener. They wanted to get rid of them it seems.

ZJ brake parts are probably cheaper for what you're wanting to do.

But the Liberty swap is just that. No monkeying around with a dremel.
And up here in the rust belt older ZJs are getting harder to find. The backing plates off a ZJ are no longer available.
So you are getting a braking system with newer parts availability.
The only problem I had was that the brake lines fittings are metric while the XJ are Imperial. An adapter fitting took care of that. Napa has them.

If ZJ parts aren't available in your area then it may be worth it to get the axle for the brake parts. But you wouldn't want to swap the axle entirely. Leafs vs coils, etc, etc...

That's if he has a 8.25 and he states he has a 35, which is a bolt on. Yes the liberty discs are a bolt on no messing around swap. I'd rather have to a fit the hole then be a loose and possibly not centered.

liberty 8.25 aren't a direct bolt on swap. It uses coil springs in the rear. U ll need to remove them and weld on the leaf spring perches on it.

Edit. Never mind. I thought u were speaking of swapping the axles.

I see reading comprehension is at an all time low.
I used the quote about the ZJ brakes and some of you read what you wanted to and not what was written.
I was talking specifically about the BRAKES. At NO TIME did I mention the complete axle.

From what I've read about the ZJ plate versus the Liberty, the hole will be less than an eighth of an inch larger (more like a sixteenth) and the 4 bolts to the axle are identical.
If you have a problem I doubt it will be from the centre hole being to large.
And I still stand by the fact that getting 2003 to 2013 brake parts are easier to find than 1993 to 1998.

I find that the zj parts are a lot easier here to find in the jy then the kl here espespeciallyto find one with discs.
Also the Explorer parts are interchangeable to use with the zj parts. I found this out when doin the swap. The Explorer calibers had a slightly bigger piston, and the pads thicker also the e brake hardware I ddint notice but look almost the same.
