Default XJ's Going Up in Price?

Maybe it's just because I live in the South, and a 15 year old Jeep is hard to find rust free unless it's coming from my area, but has anyone else noticed that XJ prices are trending up?

I got my 2000 with under 100K miles 2 years ago from a dealership for $5K out the door. You can't find a late model XJ under 100k miles for less than $7K now, usually more.

It's not just the lower mileage ones either. I get on craigslist daily because I'm looking at buying a second one and They all hover around the $5K mark even if the mileage is creeping closer to 200K. I even saw a 2000 with 94K miles get sold for $10K last week.

Anyone else notice this or is this just a Southern problem?

Well, it isn't limited to the south and it really isn't a "problem". If people are willing to pay those prices, it means they value them at those prices. Buyers and sellers of anything, left alone from outside interference, will always find equilibrium, the "fair price". Personally, I keep hoping more XJ owners hack them up as it drives the price up for unmolested ones.

The one thing I (sorta) don't understand is why people north of the Mason-Dixon line pay the prices they do, which are pretty much in line with southern prices. Buy a ticket to the south for rust-free units for the same price for a better value and soon enough the prices in the north would plummet as sellers would see no one is willing to pay what they are asking for rusty ones. Basic economics man.

USAA valued my 2001 at more than triple ($5900) for what I paid for it here locally. So far I have only spent $1500.00 getting it in good running order and $800.00 of that was in AC work (new compressor, dryer, blower motor, evaporator, and heater core).

The prices have been going up for a few years now. What used to be a $800 XJ, people are asking between $1500-1800. I'm talking no floors, no rockers, and rusty body panels. There are nice examples that are worth what people are asking, but honestly, I think a very large chunk of people are dreaming at some of these prices. You see them all the time on CL, ads that are months old and constantly being relisted.

Everything is going up not just XJs. This tells me that the dollar is getting weaker.

It's not that your XJ is more valuable, it's that your dollar is less valuable.

Not sure about that. Maybe to a certain extent, but not to where it would be this noticeable.

I could easily sell my XJ right now for $8000. I sold my wife's 2005 Xterra(89k miles) for $9000, and bought my her a 2008 Volvo XC90(92k miles) for the same $9000.

My 15 year old Jeep should not be worth almost the same as an 8 year newer Volvo with fewer miles.

This too, but I didn't want to mention it because it could be deemed "political".

XJ TENN is right. It's just inflation. Poorer people trying to get more out of what they have to so they can put the money into something nicer.

KBB continues to show the value of mine going down as more miles get put on it. Dealers are continuing to ask the same amount that they have since I bought mine.

And diamonds should not be worth more than water, but they are.

Prices are getting higher and people are paying it so it continues to get higher. I just paid $2500 for a stock 91 2 door unmolested that still needed some maintanance work. Honestly I don't think I should have paid $1500 for that jeep but I couldn't find anything better at that price range. I see lifted xj's that are just beat to hell going for $2k+ all day. But yes there are some people that are taking it way too far. There's a guy on naxja selling a nice 88 with a 4.5 rc lift for $12k. He got a few laughs so he dropped it to $8k lol. I partially blame television. With all these new shows like American pickers, gas monkey garage, counting cars etc everybody with an older vehicle thinks they're sitting on a gold mine.

Oh please lord don't let gas go back up. Let it get cheaper. The average price of gas per gallon in Iran is .47 cents. I could fill up for $8-$10 bucks. That would make it so much easier on people.

Hell, I must've gotten really luck to find my 88 for 800 bucks..sure it's got it's personality traits..but I'll deal with em till I can scrounge up more cash to get rid of them. I see em up here in Oregon goin for pretty inexpensive. Could be that there's a lack of them down there or people have put so much into em they think they can get back what they put into them. Which we all know you usually don't. Good ol fashion supply and demand is probably the case down there
