XJ's are better than CJ's because...
My Buddy's CJ-7 with 6 inchs on 36's is pretty nasty haha I wouldn't say one is better than the other. It depends how ya build it and what kinda wheeling you're doing.

Why compare an XJ to a CJ. Seems more fitting to compare them to TJ's instead since they shared the same engine and some interior designs from 87 to 2001. A buddy of mine had a CJ7 with a chevy 350 v8 and that thing was insane. Talk about power and fun. Like driving a big ATV. Off road it was one of the more capable off road rigs around. Plus there are no comfort features for mall crawlers. Now why is an XJ better than a TJ.... its just a capable with just as many available mods but much more room for you and your friends and all of their stuff.

They are not comparable. CJs came with a V8 and that pretty much ends the comparison.
YJs though can be compared, apart from the looks, an XJ is definitely better than any YJ for a few basical reasons: the drivetrain is the same but a wrangler weighs 1000 lbs more than a cherokee because of its frame.
The front axle in a cherokee is a reverse cut high pinion dana30, stronger than a conventional low pinion dana30 found in a wrangler.
Coil springs up front are better than leafs.

Cj's are simple, came with a very reliable 4.2, very strong transfer case, solid frame, everything is quick to disasemble. Frame off resto's are possible, simple guages and wiring. Open top
Xj's are a great out of the box wheeler, reliable 4.0, reliable transmission, a real back seat, stable at speeds because of wheelbase, coil front suspension.
Xj's and CJ's are both in completely different categorys and are not really comparable
