XJ worth $2800?
What you guys think? 87 I6-AX15-231-30-44-187 thousand miles. Owner gave run around answers with questionable dates. This is what I gathered. Engine-stock. Trans-stock but has a skid. Probably a useless skid. T case-stock with no protection and factory drive shaft. Dana 30-1 piece axle-diff armor-WJ brakes-needs ball joints-claims it has 456 gears and a locker-factory steering. Dana 44-diff armor-claims 456 and locker. Said it was a RE short arm 4.5 with 2.5 inch spacers in the front. JKS quick discos. Body is rough and rusty. Pinch seams have been cut into and rockers/bottom of doors are destroyed. Interior is rough. Front bumper was "built by him". Winch is generic. Has new cat and muffler for smog. Looks like it should pass. Says 2800 is bottom dollar. Worth it?

It might just be the picture, but that tie-rod does NOT look straight.
It might be an RE lift, but the drop brackets are not complete for an RE kit. The drop brackets for an RE kit have an extra piece that goes behind the rear of the control arm and bolts up onto the frame rail and extends all the way to the crossmember under the transfer case. If you look at the pic, you can see the "clean" spot on the bottom of the frame rail where it looks like that piece was removed.
The transmission skid looks fair, but if you check out cross member under the T-case, that thing has CLEARLY taken some abuse. I would be very interested in what things look like above that skid.
Just based on the pictures and what you report and how he handled it, I probably wouldn't pay $2800 for it unless I was looking for a base to start with. If the lockers are really there, and it is REALLY 4.56, this could serve, but this thing has clearly been wheeled hard.

RE has a short arm kit that bolts into the factory UCA and LCA mounting positions. That's what it seems to be. Its beat up. I think it was maybe his kids or somebody's kid. Maybe step kid.... Obviously not his. He is the guy in the picture. Said it has been here and there. Rubicon for example. Yes the tie rod is bent and I know it didn't make it through the Rubicon with that tie rod. Going to see if he will let me pop the diff covers to see what's inside. Said he drove it last week also. The rust on the rotors say otherwise.

I would offer him 1500 bucks max for that.Hes cut some corners and makes me feel hes cut more you shouldn't.The big red flag to me is that back bumper he welded on shackles to a tube bumper. The shackles are not tied in to anything if you ever used them they will fail or pull the bumper off maybe. The t case drop does bug me i know its the cheapest way but why not do a hack and tap if your on a budget? On the locker and gears unless hes willing to drop both diff covers i would take that with a grain of salt.

Yes I would make him an offer if it ran and drove out fine of $800-1k. I hate buying anything that someone has Half Azzed thrown together I don't know how you consider it but I would have to inspect it close to be sure its what he said it was and part it out using what I needed on another XJ.
Then do you really want a Renix or a newer one 97-99 with the 99 being best and stock if you can find one. Then you can build it your way, it takes time to find what you want I looked for 6 mo. for my 99 before I found it.
But I paid $1800 for it ran and drove well body in good shape no dents or rust.

It looks 'well used'. $1200 would be my absolute high limit, and I probably wouldn't go that high. Just from what I see, my offer would be around $600. If it runs well. Your mileage may vary.

Yeah. Its a pile. Going to see if he will let me pop the diff covers and inspect tomorrow. If it has gears and lockers I might offer him a thousand. If he takes it I will just keep the axles, a few other items and part it out.
