Default XJ Useless in 2wd?

My 93 Cherokee has been stuck in 2wd for almost a year now. On account of not having the proper tools to set up a front diff, so there are no gears in my front end. But what happened today took the cake, I've decided to spend $300 and send it to a repair shop to get my 4wd back. What happened was I had to take an alternate route in order to jump someone's car off and I tried to cross a shallow ditch that I normally would cross with no issue. But my front tires hit and it just sat there. No traction, no pull, had to get my friends Ford to pull me out. So my question is, does anyone else have this problem? 2wd is only good for pavement and nothing else?

Lock the rear. 2wd is then 2wd

The rear sway at doesn't even exist on mine lol. And it's got Mastercraft AXT 31s. I was thinking Italy be a weight issue. It I wasn't sure. What I do know is I can't go anywhere even remotely off road with it being strictly 2wd.

I've gone many places in 2wd before perfectly fine.... I guess it all depends on how you drive it in 2wd I'm sure if you hit that ditch fast enough you would've seen the other side.... May have broken something but would've made it through.... Many times I've gotten so stuck in 2wd drive I couldn't get out in 4.... All depends on the situation I've done offroading in 2 and 4 wheel drive. All depends that's all I'm saying.

Ahh alright lol
It wasn't a "life or death" situation so to speak. And it was at my nephews school so I didn't want to cause a huge scene by jumping a ditch at 40 mph lol. I just wanted to see if anyone else had trouble with theirs in 2wd like I have.

Drove through this in 2wd with "all terrain" 29 inch tires.... Slipped a little but just gave her a little gas

Most of the time when I am wheeling I am in 2wd unless I need to get over a large obstacle like a ledge or Boulder. Unless I am snow wheeling. But I'm also locked in the rear so 2wd is 2wd

Yeah 2WD is what I am usually always in unless it's snow or more difficult obstacles

Must just be mine then lol. I swear I can't do anything outside of pavement and dirt road driving with that open diff rear haha
I'm either gonna send it off to get my gears installed or just get another axle out of a junkyard. Which ever is cheaper.

If you still have stock gearing in the rear I'd just grab another axle from the JY. I would definitely think it'd be cheaper.

Yeah it's stock 3.55 gears.
And I checked, JY is $100 for a whole axle, and it's gonna be $300 to send it off to get gears set up. So I'll probably go that route and find an axle with a good looking 3.55 ratio and be done with it. I need my 4wd back

Lol I was on the way to a soccer game (first time I ever drove a friend more than 10 minutes away) and we got lost at night, and I did a u-turn and misjudged the depth of the ditch...we went sideways and I turned my wheels towards the road but we kept sliding sideways slowly (thankfully didn't flip...that'd be hard to explain to the parents) and then I gunned it, bounced over some rocks (heard em scrape) and we made it out in 2wd...my friend just said "jeeplife" and we went to the game haha
