Hi guys, I've been searching online but cant seem to find an answer. I purchased my 1998 XJ from a surfer so you figure the rust issue. I know I will be changing some panels to the body and doing a full paint job (when I say I will meaning I will have someone do it, I don't know how to do body work). Anyways, the bottom needs some treatment and I have been searching and everywhere it says to use the spray that converts rust to paintable surface. To me thats like putting on a black shirt to look skinny instead of fixing the problem. Before I do that I would like to eliminate some of the rust but time for me is very limited. I was looking into a spray called RUST FREE by Boeshield. Can I spray that stuff, leave it for a while and pressure wash it off? Thats kinda what I would like to do, I don't mind doing it a couple times then doing the Rustoleum thing. Any thoughts? Would this product work? Any other solutions that might involve a spray and a powerwash or something? If I did this correctly, you should be able to see my Jeep, first time putting a picture here...

 

Can you be more specific about where the rust is, and how bad. Pictures are worth a thousand words when it comes to rust.

In general though, the only real way to permanently and completely remove rust is to roll of your sleeves and dig in. Typically that means dissassembling your Jeep to various levels and grinding off the rust manually. Its time and labor intensive. No quick fix.

If you just have surface rust in easy to reach areas .... you can brush off any loose rust and paint it with POR15. It will bond with the rust to stop it from spreading. The stuff WORKS ... if you follow the directions and do it right.

 

I have rust in the same area shown as your picture. Check out my build thread in my signature, page 6-7 I believe. I just patched my rocker in some areas. I've used two "rust converter" products. One is Duplicolor Rust Fix. This stuff sprays on clear and works fairly well for light rust, but will not penetrate deep rust and is not sandable. Another that I've been using much more is Chassis Saver, which is comparable to POR15. It works extremely well. With either product though, you're going to want to remove as much rust as possible. With that rust you have there, you're best off to patch it with some 16 gauge steel and weld it in. Either way, you can bet that there is some nice rust all the way down your rocker panel. It will likely be a temporary fix. If you're looking for a permanent solution, you'll have to cut the entire rocker out and treat the inside panel, and then weld a new one in. It sucks, but it's the only way to do it right. Good luck!

Thats really not that bad. Just take some sandpaper to it then paint it.

 

x2 on chassis saver. sticks to rust like no other.

 

That rust around the rear front spring mount looks concerning. But I wouldn't hesitate to fix it.
