The JK issue is different. Those fires seem to be because of debris getting caught by the fuel tank pan and getting ignited by the exhaust.

The XJ,ZJ and KJ fires are claimed to be due to rear impacts.
If a recall is issued then it most likely would be to add a bolt on cover/skid plate type thing to help protect from an impact like that.
My question is if Chrysler will figure the extra labor time for dealing with added on trailer hitches. They typically don't take that into consideration.

And 99xjteen, if you need to take it in to the dealer ask for a senior tech to do yours.
I understand your concern. We have some young guys I wouldn't want working on my vehicle either but those of us older Mastertechs have had more than a few tanks out.

Good luck getting my hitch off.........been in salt spray since 2001.

I also like the idea of a free skid plate also. Wonder how long it will take to become a recall?

Same here!.......and I wouldn't trust my local Dodge/Jeep dealership to replace my wiper blades. They are a bunch of crooks.
There is one about 25 miles away however, that I do trust.

"NHTSA’s investigation includes model year 1993 to 2004 Grand Cherokees, model year 1993 to 2001 Cherokees, and 2002 to 2007 Liberty models." Good thing mine's a '91!

We need to sticky this thread or make a forum announcement for it. If there's a recall, we all need to be aware of it!

That is almost more worrysome than having a "new guy" do it... If you have dropped 50 tanks before then there is a good chance that you dont take it serious anymore and slack off thinking that its no big deal. This is not directed at you but i have worked at 3 dealerships and those guys are sketchy for sure!

oh darn, meant to post this yesterday when I found it but I was on my phone and kinda forgot. It doesnt surprise me of this issue due to how close the fuel tank is to the rear bumper which puts it in the crumple zone.

yeah I have one of those step bumpers that go in the hitch. won't be really hard to take it off, but I torqued that mother on there with the light thread locker. Not impossible, but pain in the *** to get off probably

amazing to me how many people go around with just the regular pin in their hitch...then again the fact that I see so many maybe means no one is stealing them.
