I apologize if I am not going about this in the typical manner for this forum.
I am a college student and will be graduating soon, so I will have time to spend on the jeep. I have saved up about 6k for my Jeep and would like to use just about all of it.
Before I say what I have in mind, please let me know what you would do in my situation.
Thanks a lot.

buy a 1992 to 1996 4 door xj and buy a 6'' long arm kit and some 33"-35" tires. That would be a good start.Good luck

if your looking to stricly wheel it i would reccomed putting and arb air locker up in the front diff and a 4.5 inch lift with some 33's and some wheel well shaving with bushwacker flares and you should be looking prety awsome. maybe try and find an old gas can to mount on the jeep somewhere they look pretty cool.

I also wanted to ask what are some custom additions that owners commonly make are. I've done quite a bit of machining and I'm alright at welding, but my buddy is really good.
Thanks again,

Have recovery points front and rear, buy a good strap, get a buddy with a Jeep and go wheeling. Note any shortcomings this produces and start modifying your Jeep to your style of off-roading.
Doing it this way will make you a better driver. Building your Jeep up based on others opinions, well, they may not wheel the same type of terrain you do.
Unless you drive a mall crawler. Then the above does not apply.

I'll be going to TBS shortly after graduating, so I only have about 4 weeks to work on it. I would like to have a good set up so I can do some rock crawling without worry too much about it breaking because it is my only vehicle and I will not have that much time to work on it if it does.
I was thinking about getting a 4.5 inch lift, some 33s, lockers, a front and rear recover kit, and a mean exhaust, but I'm not sure on what armor to get. Skid plates seem like a must, but bumpers seem so damn expensive that there must be a cheaper option.
Even though I have some money to spend, I don't want to buy the best of the best. What are some solid manufacturers which don't break the bank?
In the end I just want to have a solid set up which will be relatively inexpensive.
Thanks,
`Oz

You can buy a aussie locker for you front axle, they cost about $250. For crawlin you definitely want skid plates for your transfer case and gas tank. You can pull a gas tank skid form a junkyard zj. As for the lift I would go with the RC 4.5 LA and some 33's. If you really want to get bumpers but don't want to spend that much cash on them. Sit down and draw out a design that you want and go to the nearest steel supplier, then start cutting and welding.
