Default XJ drivetrain clunking when changing from R to Dr

Hey all,

I am new to the forum, and have a 1998 XJ (this is my first wife).
Does anyone also have the clunking noise when shifting from reverse to drive, while standing still(gives the sense that there could be some worn parts in the drive train), I have heard by some that this is normal.

Anyway, here where I say there are not so many XJ`s, and so not to much accruate, qualified advise.

Check your motor mounts and transmission mounts.

x3 on u-joints, mine did the same thing after a weekend adventure, crawled under the Jeep and had a considerable amount of slop in the rear joint, changed it out and no more noise.

You prob don't want to hear this but pinion bearings will do this as well.

X4 on the u-joints. Also, a sticking brake pad can exacerbate clunking.

Mine has done it since I bought it almost 3 years ago, so it probably was doing that for longer than that. I never did anything about it, it hasnt' gotten worse and it is an 11 year old vehicle (yours is 13!) so I wouldnt worry much about it.

Default Clunking noise

Thanks for the replies,

1) The whole rear diff has been redone about 500miles ago (clunking was there before and after), all the bearings and seals where replaced.

2) I have an 4.5in Zone lift

3) Also a detroit lokker in the rear

4) Propshaft has been ballanced with new u joints

To me it sounds as if it could be some there is some slack in the teansfere case or the splines going into the T case or diff,

Hopes this helps

I would also like to add.... WOW... WHAT A VEHICLE......

Thanks,

Looking at this forum, I wish, that I was staying in the US, I would then really modify this `Green Monster`. This is by far the greatest vehical I have ever owned.

I am just very glad that I took the 4.0L and not the diesel that was on offer.

I will be posting some photo`s, once I get use to using this forum
