I have a 99 cherokee classic and i am a little confused on what an xj is. Is this an xj? What makes it an xj and so forth. Thank you.

All xj's are Cherokee's but not all Cherokee's are XJ's. The XJ is what it is because it's a unitbody as opposed to the FSJ Cherokee which had a frame.

You are correct. Every Jeep platform has a moniker - a letter designation.
Here are the "Cherokee platform" monikers (FSJ, compact, and international):
1963-1991 Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer/Cherokee (FSJ or Full Size Jeep) = SJ's
1984-2001 Compact Cherokee = XJ's (these are the majority of vehicles found on here. The XJ continued to be built in China through 2005)
1986-1992 Comanche = MJ (a few on here have these)
1993-1998 Grand Cherokee = ZJ (some on here have these)
1998-2004 Grand Cherokee = WJ (some on here have these)
2004-2010 Grand Cherokee = WK (I'm sure some on here have these too)
2006-2010 Commander = XK (built on the WK platform)
2011-present Grand Cherokee = WK2 (maybe a few of our richer members have one of these)
2002-2007 Liberty = KJ (in other countries it is called the Cherokee. here, it's called a joke)
2007-present Liberty = KK (an even bigger joke)

There are others as well (the various CJ's, J10/20's, various Wrangler's, CJ, DJ, C101/104, FJ, and VJ, and the laughing stock MK twins).
