Default X,M,Z,W J

New to working on jeeps particularly 2004 GC Laredo 4x4 auto v6. I've noted the frequent use of the X,M,Z or W/J designations. Would someone explain these and what useful information comes from them. Also which one refers to the model I've mentioned.
