Default Would like some input from Cherokee owners

I have a thread over on the jeepforums.com however I found this amazing forum and thought to ask here as well.

I am looking to get rid of my wrangler, for some reasons not going into here to keep this short, and I am wanting to stick with a JEEP.

My question, XJ or standard Cherokee or go with a Grand Cherokee??

From looking at the craigslist ads they are about the same in cost depending on the years though that are different.

I am looking to use the Cherokee for winter driving to and from work as well as hauling my 14ft boat in the summertime for fishing. It will not be a rock crawler or anything like that. I know that the Grands are the frilly feature rich Cherokee's and I do not need all that but if the price is right.

If someone would like to take a look at these craigslist results and let me know what you think from what is available and what I should be asking when I make contact to anyone of these ads or any in the future.

Thanks in advance!

Craigslist ads for Cherokee in my area

Go with Cherokee XJ.

Grand Cherokee looks like a total soccer mom car!

As long as you get a 4.0L engine, you're good.

How about miles to cost ratio? Like don't pay more than x dollars if it has 200,000 miles, etc...

Prices are different all over. Check out this thread, it's how much we've paid for our XJ's. - https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f59/wh...-your-xj-8451/

Here in WNY, Rough prices are;
99 -01 would be around $6,000 to $4,500 (milage 80,000 - 120,000)
mid to late 90's are around $2,000 to $4,000 (milage 110,000 - 160,000)
early 90's are around $1,500 to $2,500 (milage 150,000 to 300,000)

Good luck, the 6 cyclinder engin is bullet proof.

if you plan on driving it alot and needing 4wd in the snow, may want to consider the np242 transfer case.

I read quite a few pages of that thread! Plenty of good reading there!

You did give me a good idea though with those price ranges as to what to look for.

I heard the motors are bullet proof. But are they not the same as the 4.0 or 4.2 of that of the wrangler? I have an oil leak and tap something fierce with the wrangler I have.

Regarding the post about snow, yes it will be driven in snow so I will look for the transfer case mentioned... any idea of the years that one was used?

DD and towing a fairly large boat, I'd get a V8 ZJ before I got an XJ and I'm on my 4th XJ. More comfortable, more power, will handle towing better. The v8 isn't as reliable as the 4.0, but it's still a solid motor.

As for Wrangler 4.0s being different, they're not. Same motor, the only difference is the block casting is different so accessories bolt up different so they're not a direct swap.

This.

For towing a good sized boat I'd go straight to a V8 ZJ.

He asked for XJ/regular cherokees or grands. The ZJ and WJ are Cherokees and they're based off the XJ platform which is why this site has sections for them. The ZJ was designed by AMC as a replacement for the XJ before XJs even hit lots in 1983. It just never happened under AMC and Chrylser decided to build them in addition to XJs. They didn't become their own platform until 2005 when the WK came out.

Try to grab a wj grand cherokee with a v8 and quadradrive.. that's really the beat snow driving system. I think they have limited slips in the front and back too.
