Default Is this worth the purchase?

Looking at a Black 2001 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 60th Anniversary edition with 153k miles. Guy is asking $3,800.

The miles scare me a little but I know the straight 6 is supposed to be a tank. I figured I would have it looked at by my mechanic first. Interior and Exterior seem in solid condition and owner claims no rust.

Depending on where you live, $3800 would probably be a fair price on a clean 2001 with only 153k miles. Bring a qualified mechanic with you to look for problems.

The 4.0l I6 frequently reaches 300k+ easy if folks take good care of them.

Because it's an 01 look for signs of overheating. 0331 heads are known for cracking.

Check for any cooling system maintenance like replaced thermostat housing, new hoses, new water pump, new radiator, then check to make sure there aren't any signs of water in the oil, low oil pressure, or chugging. If there are, I would be weary.

If everything checks out and it's clean, might be a good deal. If you don't know what you're doing, have an expert check it out.

Is there another year I should be looking for in favor of the '01?

I have $3,000-$4,000 to play with. I want a Jeep I can use as a daily and will last a while, in addition I plan to make it work for beach days and hunting trips. however, I don't drive much as I work in NYC(live on long island)

1999 is the best year IMO. Takes the best of the 2000/2001 and mixes it with the best of the 1998 and earlier.

Be aware that the anniversary editions have ABS which in turn means you will get a D35 rear axle. It is a huge weak point if you plan to go Off-road at all.

I found a 1999 Sport w/ 111k Miles which is also in pretty good shape and the buyer wants $3,400. I think I will pass up on the '01 and go for the '99 which is also black and in pretty good shape.

1999 is pretty much the best year. Good catch.

The '91 is about an hour away from me without plates. Is it reasonable for me to call a mechanic local to where it is and pay to have them inspect it for me? I know it won't be a mechanic I know but I imagine it would be best to have the jeep inspected on a lift

In the long run the jeep is cheaper and gives you less problems.
