The "knock" he's referring to is most likely the clicking noise that the jeep lifters make after a lot of miles have been put on them. Its not too loud tho and you never really hear it while driving with the windows up and after it warms up unless ur really listening. My 98 has over 260k on it, it's been making that noise for a few years now and it's my daily driver. I'd just go listen to it cuz some are worse then others and you don't know how he's been driving it. If it's much louder than what most would consider a "ticking" noise, which is different than a "knock", then he may have collapsed a lifter or something else, in which case I wouldn't pick it up.
If you do pick it up, and hopefully for a lower price for that year and mileage (try offering 600 and see what he says) just be sure to change your oil on time and don't be too hard on it, by say red-lining the tach or doing burnouts around the block, which isn't all that fun in a jeep anyways (and most jeep owners agree that slow is the way to go, while commuting and offroading) and it should last a lot longer.
