Warn is the most popular and for good reason. I have a smittybilt winch, cuz im on a buget like everyone else, and its done great so far! I've dunked it in water. Pulled out many jeeps and cars. Never once did i have a problem. I pulled my friends jetta completely sideways on pavent haha.
But if you are gonna use aton and in extreme situations i'd save up your money and get a nice one.

The Warn M8000 is supposed to be pretty good and runs about $550. Thats the one I'm going to run. I think for the extra money the Warns the way to go, they're solid and as they get older and start to wear they're super easy to rebuild. Just my .02.

Cool, a guy I run with runs a Smittybuilt XRC-8, seems to work really well, he hasn't run it long enough to tell how it'll be longevity wise. He only dropped about $300 on it. I was thinking about going that route but am choosing the Warn because I've worked with and on many of them.

I'm looking at getting a winch soon too. I think I'm going to go with a smittybuilt and a synthetic rope. Have a decent winch, and still be in less than buying an expensive Warn with a steel cable.
I have the XRC8 and love it.Heres some reviews.

This is a pretty good read comparing winches. It looks like they beat on the Smittybuilt pretty hard:
