I want a new bumper , I dont do a lot of wheeling and currently am only sporting a 3" lift. I plan to go to 5" and some 33" but dont know if I should do a winch right now or not. I will be purchasing the bumper here not only to support other memebers but there are some nice craftsman here. just dont want to get a non winch bumper and then regret it later.

 

I suggest getting a plate just in case, whether you end up getting a winch or not, plus it's a plus if you end up selling it.

cause...
you will have a nice looking bumper
you will have motivation to adding a winch.

I'd go with a receiver mount so you can winch from the front or the back if needed.

What makes them suck?

 

It's a lot of pressure on the single tongue pin, where as with a full bumper you've got (at least should have) 7 bolts per side that are taking the stress of the winch

the pin on the receiver has a WHOLE lot more strength than a winch can provide. If you can tow a 10k+ trailer up a hill...i think the pin can hold a light weight cherokee getting pulled up a hill or out of mud.

If all you're pulling is a XJ on ground that offers little resistance, then yes. But if you're in deep enough mud (half the tire height), the "vehicle weight" is doubled due to the vacuum and resistance the mud creates. The deeper the mud, the "heavier" the vehicle becomes. A XJ in deep enough mud can easily "weigh" over 10,000 lbs.

 

plus who is going to want to lug a winch around when you are stuck? more often than not you will want to be pulled forward to clear an obstacle, not backwards and have to attempt it again and again.
